Overview
The Smart POS Modernization project transformed BCEL's payment infrastructure by replacing outdated terminals with cutting-edge Android-based Smart POS devices. This strategic initiative positioned BCEL as a direct acquirer for all major card networks.
Backstory
BCEL operated with aging POS terminals that were difficult to maintain and lacked modern features. The bank relied on third-party acquirers for card processing, resulting in higher fees and limited control over the merchant experience. Merchants demanded features like digital receipts, inventory integration, and better reporting capabilities that legacy terminals couldn't provide.
Action
I led the technical development of a modern Smart POS application built on Android using Capacitor SDK with a Svelte webview for the user interface. This hybrid approach allowed for rapid development while maintaining native performance. I coordinated with international card networks (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, UnionPay, JCB) to complete certification requirements. The rollout involved replacing 2,500 terminals across the country, requiring careful logistics and merchant training.
Result
BCEL successfully achieved direct acquirer certification for all major card networks, reducing processing fees and gaining full control over merchant relationships. The new Smart POS system offers features like digital receipts, sales analytics, and seamless software updates. Merchant satisfaction increased dramatically, and the bank now processes millions of transactions monthly through the modernized infrastructure.
